E.PO.D. Converge or concede.

Educating People On Demand requires more than providing access to lectures, sharing lesson plans and encouraging peer interaction. When M.I.T. launched their Open Course Ware site (O CW) it was defined by Anne Margulies, as a  model for open sharing of information. Their format was radically different than the distance education programs and tuition based, degree granting, web courses.Publishing the software tools, lecture notes, syllabus, lab instruction, and world class lectures sparked the movement  I denote, all too often, as E.P.O.D. An ember felt by more than 300,000 people through over 40 million hits within the first three weeks of the website's furtive opening.
.Educating People on Demand, for free, depends on convergence. The innovative uses of open  information sharing illustrates the concept better than words can define. I recently enrolled in a programming course taught on the campus of Cal Arts. In cooperation with Coursera, a free online service, I not only enjoy the material, the instructors engage with me as do thousands of peers through evaluation and emails like these.
         Dear Christopher Eck,

A brief reminder that the second assignment for this class, Make a Melody, is due on Monday, November 4 at 12:00 pm PST (Los Angeles time). This Sunday, along with many around the globe, we too in California will be switching from Daylight Savings Time (PDT) and turning our clocks back one hour to Pacific Standard Time (PST; UTC -800). What's more important is if and how this affects you, wherever you might be. To be sure, refer to the specific deadline for your time zone on the course's Assignments page, or in the Upcoming Deadlines widget on the main page.

Also, if you were considering enrolling in Signature Track, we'd like to remind you there are less than three days remaining to sign up! Though this course is available to everyone for free, with Signature Track your coursework is securely linked to your identity using your photo ID and unique typing pattern. At the end of the course, as opposed to a Statement of Accomplishment, you will earn a verifiable electronic certificate that you can share with employers or educational institutions through a unique, secure URL. For more information and pricing please visit the Signature Track landing page for this course.

Week 3: Sound File Manipulation opens on Monday -- we'll send another notice when we're set to launch.

How To Re -Engineer

Metadata course/North Carolina

Christopher Eck, The latest information from  Metadata: Organizing and Discovering Information  by  The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill  on Coursera. Congratulations on surviving the first week of Metadata: Organizing and Discovering Information! As some of you have noted on the discussion forums, unit 1 was pretty long. But don't panic! Unit 1 is the longest unit -- all of the remaining units are shorter (though some units are longer than others). Many MOOCs (including this one) are created for a broad general audience: maybe you have some background in Information Science, and if so, great! But I wanted to create this course to be accessible even to students with no Information Science background. Which is why unit 1 was so long: I tried to fill in some of that background. And hopefully pique your interest in Information Science! But now that that background is background, we'll start building on it. In unit 2, we will look at our first ex...
